Transboundary ecological connectivity of the Alps and the Dinaric Mountains – DINALPCONNECT.

The project “DINALPCONNECT” aims to enhance transnational cooperation to reduce fragmentation and improve ecological connectivity for the long-term conservation of biodiversity in the Dinaric Mountains and their connection to the Alps.

The strategy of “DINALPCONNECT” for ecological connectivity is based on spatial analysis of existing corridors and barriers, providing a framework at a macro-regional level. Action plans focus on guidelines for agricultural and forestry practices that protect biodiversity and enable the implementation of measures to improve ecological connectivity in selected habitats on both sides of national borders.

The project is expected to strengthen transnational environmental awareness, combat fragmentation, and ensure the smooth functioning of ecosystems in the Adriatic-Ionian region through the following actions:

  • Strategies to improve Ecological Connectivity in the area surrounding the Dinaric Mountains and the Alps.
  • Action plans for pilot areas promoting Ecological Connectivity.
  • Networks of cross-border pilot areas.

The “DINALPCONNECT” project began in March 2020 and was scheduled for completion in February 2023. It is funded by the Second Call of INTERREG V-B Adriatic-Ionian ADRION Programme 2014–2020, which includes the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) Fund.

Within the project, AVMap undertook the following:

  • Organization of technical meetings to inform stakeholders and promote project actions.
  • Data collection and analysis of international practices for the development of ecological connectivity strategies.
  • Development of an action plan through the study of the Greek pilot area and the organization of a workshop.
  • Creation of a cross-border network for ecological connectivity.
  • Preparation of a dissemination report for the project activities.
  • Preparation of a progress report as part of financial management.
